February 10, 2025. Lorene Willis and Bryan Vigil, owners of L Designs, Etc., spoke to the students at Dulce Middle High School about the significance of Jicarilla Day. Their presentation was entitled, "Why We Celebrate Jicarilla Day." This tribal holiday allows the tribal government and various organizations on the reservation to declare a "day off." The presentation included a brief history of the Jicarilla Apache people, drawing from both books and oral stories. Students were asked to sit on the floor, fostering a sense of openness that is free of distractions from cell phone, desks or tables. Sitting on the floor is a method used by traditional Apaches that foster closeness to our mother, Earth while enhancing communication that have been used for centuries. From the presenters’ perspective, the students were respectful and attentive as the elders shared their knowledge. A special thanks to the teachers and Principal Ms. Jobe for allowing L Designs, Etc. to offer this meaningful presentation. A written description and download of the brief history of Jicarilla Day may be found under the menu item: Our Work.
