Editorial. November 4th marks an opportunity for our community to vote for the most qualified, energetic, and committed individual who will use their common sense and ability to work together with others, even when views differ, in a respectful and thoughtful manner. It isn't what it seems to serve as a public official. Governmental policies and bureaucratic red tape hinder progress in most instances and it will be up to the elected officials to see through the noise and challenge systems that do not work. The Dulce Independent Schools is a public school located in the heart of the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. As such, it operates under several laws that apply to the school district. Most notably, the Open Meetings Act, the Indian Education Act and Yazzie/Martinez lawsuit. With over 90% of the students identifying as indigenous, we adults have to embrace the responsibility of doing what it takes to ensure each child receives an equitable education. Take time to fully vet the candidates vying for School Board and vote responsibly. Our children depend on it. The future of our sovereignty depends on the power of their education and the strength of their minds.
